Irving S. Gilmore Foundation
Located in the heart of downtown Kalamazoo, the Irving S. Gilmore Foundation is committed to supporting the arts and human needs of the community. In 2002, we designed a new office space that represents the history and tastes of the organization. The goal was to create a classic, timeless space that serves multiple functions.
The Lobby establishes the initial impression of the Foundation. The color palette, finishes, and furnishings create a dignified, traditional workspace. Warm gold and cool gray tones combine to establish a quiet elegance and historical atmosphere. Guests are welcomed by an elevator lobby and then led directly to the reception desk by the flooring transition of granite and carpet. A comfortable waiting area for guests incorporates appropriately scaled hospitality furnishings and a Steinway baby grand piano. The piano is a focal point of the space, located outside the Boardroom. Lightweight side seating can easily be relocated to the piano area for recitals. The Boardroom was designed as both a meeting space and presentation area. Upscale commercial materials include custom cherry raised panels and a custom granite conference table.
At the center of the public space is the custom reception desk. A faux column was added adjacent to an existing column at the corners of the desk to anchor the desk and create a symmetrical feature. Decorative wall sconces on the columns add warm, inviting ambient light. The ceiling height was raised during the remodel. Recessed areas and bulkheads were created to delineate the separate areas - reception, elevator, lobby and seating.
