Thrifty Kitty Gem Camper

Kalamazoo, Michigan

This early 1970's Gem camper was found already gutted near Marshall, Michigan, while we were at Camp Turkeyville for All Things Vintage. Sondra thought this would be the perfect camper to rehab for her daughter and friends to enjoy. With a plan to use economical remnants and a combination of new and resale finds, the Thrifty Kitty was born!

The industrial, shabby chic interior has a complementary color scheme of red and aqua green. Twin beds provide two comfortable sleeping spaces while also serving as lounging sofas during the day. A drop leaf table, found at local resale shop Kalamazoo Kitty, was spray painted to fit the decor. The flooring is a never-used sheet vinyl remnant rescued from a dumpster. Free! Teens love the writable surface on the refrigerator, which also has a cool retro handle. Sondra's daughter selected the fabric for custom-made curtains, perfect for the Thrifty Kitty theme.

This project has been a fun opportunity for mother-daughter collaboration. Work is still in progress. Interior paneling and lighting are coming soon, so stay tuned!
